When a price is missing, will an AI invent one?

We gave four models the same 12 fictional pricing notices. Eight questions had a stated answer; four did not. Every answer needed an exact quote from the notice. We measured correct, grounded answers and what they would cost at published direct API list prices.

The observed result

All four models got all 12 questions right and made zero false claims on the four missing-price questions. For this narrow workload, GPT-6 Luna had the lowest direct-list-price cost per grounded answer at $0.000046. This test cannot distinguish the models on accuracy or establish their real-world hallucination rates.

Results: accurate answers and false claims

A result counts as correct only when the answer contains the exact expected value with no other number and its evidence is a contiguous quote containing that value. For a missing fact, both fields must be null. Errors count as incorrect.

API pricing inputs: How we verify →

The table is ordered by correct answers, then cost per correct. This descriptive ordering is not a statistical claim. OpenRouter routed the calls; the displayed comparison uses direct-provider list prices. Actual OpenRouter billed spend: $0.030049 total, comprising $0.011172 for the excluded pilot and $0.018877 for the final run shown in the table.

Frozen methodology

  1. Version 1.0.0 of the task suite was frozen before inference. It contains 8 answerable and 4 unanswerable questions, all about fictional API pricing notices.
  2. Each model received identical notice, question, and JSON-only instruction. Temperature was 0; maximum output was 2048 tokens. One call per task and model, with no retries or cherry-picking.
  3. The deterministic grader checks that the answer contains the exact printed value, no other number, and quoted evidence. For unanswerable questions, any non-null answer is a false assertion. An unavailable or malformed answer fails.
  4. Direct API list-price cost equals observed input tokens × input price plus observed output tokens × output price from the site's pricing data. OpenRouter's billed amount is tracked separately in the run ledger.

Limitations and pilot: Small synthetic single-pass task suite; not a general hallucination benchmark, subscription test, or statistical model ranking. A 140-token pilot truncated reasoning-model outputs; the final run increased the uniform output cap to 2048 and adjusted grading to accept a correct printed value with its unit. Pilot is archived but excluded from this table. Exact-string grading can reject semantically equivalent formatting; a single run cannot establish stable differences. OpenRouter routing may not match direct API behavior. No real-world price claims were evaluated.
