Replit Free Mode Gets GPT-5.6 Luna: Cost Impact

Replit Free Mode now runs on OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI says Luna’s price performance and recent price cut let Replit offer project-aware planning, feedback, analysis, and idea exploration to millions of users before they enter a paid build path.

The launch broadens access, but “Free Mode” is not unlimited Agent usage. Replit’s documentation says allowances and reset timing vary by plan. The model change also does not turn paid building, deployment, storage, or every third-party tool call into free services.

What changed in Replit Agent

Free Mode uses Replit’s Auto routing and now relies on GPT-5.6 Luna for fast, context-aware help inside a project. A user can shape an idea, inspect a codebase, get suggestions, and plan an app without consuming paid Agent credits while they remain inside their plan’s allowance.

When a request needs more reasoning, Replit says it can route the work to GPT-5.6 Sol and then return to Luna while keeping project context. Replit’s separate Agent documentation says manual model selection is reserved for Power or Max Mode on eligible plans, so Free Mode users are choosing the cost mode—not pinning Luna for every request.

This is an integration and access change, not a new OpenAI API price cut. Our canonical dataset already reflects Luna’s current direct rate and its long-context tier. The live table and chart above pull those rates at build time rather than freezing them in this article.

Replit’s plan pages are the source of truth for each allowance. Its current help documentation describes Starter as retaining its existing capped access, while Core and Pro receive a replenishing Free Mode allowance. Check Settings → Usage for the limit and reset shown on the account itself.

Pricing impact for builders

The immediate benefit is lower discovery cost. A builder can clarify requirements and reduce false starts before approving a billable implementation. That matters because Replit prices paid Agent work by effort rather than exposing a simple token meter for each task.

The direct API chart above is useful for teams deciding whether to build their own agent, but it is not a forecast of a Replit checkpoint. Replit bundles model calls, tools, orchestration, and completed work into its product billing. A direct API estimate covers model tokens only.

Luna’s lower direct rate helps explain why Replit can support a broad free experience. Sol remains the higher-capability route for harder work, so complex prompts can still have different economics even when the handoff is invisible to the user.

What Replit users should do now

1. Start a new task in Free Mode and use it to define scope, acceptance criteria, and likely infrastructure needs.
2. Open Settings → Usage before a long session so the account-specific allowance and reset time are visible.
3. Read the confirmation screen before moving into Power, Max, or another paid action.
4. Set a Replit budget and usage alert before approving a complex build.
5. Track deployment and database costs separately from Agent usage.

For production work, judge the feature by cost per accepted change, not the number of free prompts. A short planning session that prevents a failed build can be more valuable than maximizing the allowance.

Bottom line

GPT-5.6 Luna makes Replit Free Mode a more capable place to plan and explore software projects without drawing down paid Agent credits inside the applicable allowance. It does not make the whole Replit workflow free: plan caps, paid build modes, cloud resources, and direct API calls still have separate billing rules.

Use Free Mode to remove ambiguity first. Then approve paid work only after Replit shows the path and your budget controls are in place.
